Neq'ayaraq literally means "something to remember by" in Central Yup'ik. It's traditionally a cautionary tale, but maybe you can give me a little leeway here. :)

Lucy Lupie - Cutting Seal Blubber
Lucy Lupie invited us to her home where we got to try some really good food and learn how to cut seal blubber for seal oil.
Joann (Lucy's very hip and funny daughter) did her best not to laugh at us too much while photodocumenting the occasion.
Blubber has the most interesting texture...it's fleshy and spongy simultaneously...it was very interesting to see how it is rendered close up. And apparently, unlike maqtaq up north (whale blubber), seal blubber seems to largely be used for seal oil.

What's that? That arm suddenly obscuring the view in the last seconds of the video? Who does it belong to?
Arnita.
Thanks, Arnita! >_<
I have a bevy of other videos and photos that feature the same elbow in various locales.
(For the record, I don't fault Arnita; she was just very excited and interested.)
